A well-known Selby chippy which prides itself on offering quality fish and chips for under a fiver, is celebrating after being awarded a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.
The accolade recognizes the consistently outstanding reviews Abbey Fisheries has received on the TripAdvisor website over the last 12 months.
Owner Jenny Knight, who took over Abbey Fisheries two-and-a-half years ago, told Wine & Dine Yorkshire: “We are absolutely delighted to be recognised by TripAdvisor, and by our customers, in this way. We are constantly ploughing our profits back into the business and will continue to do that in order to give our customers the best fish and chips at the best price.”
The shop on Gowthorpe, Selby, which is open six days a week and employs seven people, has recently made a major investment in the form of a state-of-the-art new frying range. In addition to its TripAdvisor award, it also has a quality award from the National Federation of Fish Friers.
Jenny Knight added: “We are proud to offer the cheapest fish and chips in Selby, but we never compromise on quality. Our customers know they will get only the freshest hot food, served by a friendly face. Without our customers we wouldn’t be here, which is why their great reviews mean so much to us.”
The business is well known for its strong sense of community spirit (it won the competition for the best dressed shop front when the Tour de Yorkshire came through the town), and this summer Jenny and her team are again giving something back to Selby with a recently announced giveaway.
Throughout June and July, every customer will be given a token to put in their preferred collection box (each one representing a local community organisation) and at the end of July the box with the most tokens inside will be given £500 from Abbey Fisheries.
Jenny Knight said: “We are a small business so £500 is a lot of money to us, but we want to share our success and see a local worthy cause put it to good use.”
