Heritage Fish and Chip shop celebrates success of Gluten-Free evenings

The owner of a heritage fish and chip shop is celebrating after the year-long success of its Gluten-Free fish and chip evenings.

Charlie Tipton, owner of Ackworth-based Hillside Fisheries, made the decision to hold a special gluten-free evening after discovering that 1 in 100 people throughout the UK are gluten intolerant.

Following a community demand for the gluten-free version of his signature fish and chips to continue, Charlie launched Gluten-Free Monday’s’ in July 2018 and now the first Monday of every month is dedicated to producing the finest fish and chips for gluten intolerant people to enjoy.

Hillside Fisheries, also known as Charlie’s Chippy, dates back to the early 1940s but was re-opened in 2017 after a devastating fire closed its doors years before.

Over the past 2 years, Charlie has built on the heritage and continues to serve fish and chips that have been described by many as ‘the best fish and chips in Yorkshire’.

During ‘Gluten-Free Mondays’, Charlie uses a gluten-free batter to coat the fish and while all products are fried in beef dripping for the truly authentic Yorkshire taste, a separate, freshly drained and cleaned fryer is used for all gluten-free orders to ensure there is no cross-contamination.

Charlie also provides gluten-free sausages, fishcakes, scallops and curry sauce so that Ackworth and surrounding residents don’t have to miss out on any of his signature dishes.

Commenting on the launch, Charlie said: “When I realised just how many people were now gluten intolerant, I knew I had a responsibility to ensure that members of the Ackworth community could still enjoy the traditional British dish, without having to travel miles.

“After seeing how successful the first one was, I decided to hold these on a monthly basis, offering different gluten-free dishes throughout the evening.”

Since the launch in 2018, the evenings have been promoted via the Hillside Fisheries Facebook page and have attracted large numbers of gluten-intolerant or celiac visitors.

Rebecca, the parent of eleven-year-old Eden who regularly attends ‘Gluten-Free Mondays’ said: “Eden sends a very big thank you! She’s now written “Fish Supper” in our calendar under every first Monday of the month, for the rest of the year. Thank you for making her a very happy 11-year-old.”

Hillside Fisheries Facebook page is also full of numerous 5-star reviews, many of which are from grateful coeliacs or those intolerant to gluten.

One anonymous visitor said: “Absolutely gorgeous and so nice for a local chippy to cater for coeliacs. The fact that the fish was delish and flaky, and the chips lovely and fluffy, was just a bonus.”
