Review: The Private Hill Café and Bar

After we reported how The Private Hill café and bar had launched a happy hour from August 1st – August 11th, The Private Hill invited our online features writer, Ellie Atack to sample what they had to offer.

Driving through the bumpy roads of York to Malton, in the far distance I noticed a handful of domes at the top of the North Yorkshire Wolds, very excited to get there.

Arriving at The Perfect Hill, tucked away in Acklam, near Malton, we made our way past the geodesic domes (intrigued to see what inside looked like) to the café. Jane’s Dome, named after owners Roddy and Jane, was beautifully furnished inside and out, immaculately clean and had a real homely feel to it.

Sat to our table by the friendly and polite staff, we opted for a gin and tonic, made with Raisthorpe’s Skinny Yorkshire Tonic which went town a treat.

The café offers a variety of lunch time snacks from lasagne to cold meat platters. Since we arrived at around 12pm, we were after brunch, so chose the bacon sandwich and poached eggs. All produce was sourced in Yorkshire, mainly from Malton as Roddy loves to support local businesses as well as serve quality to his customers. The bacon sandwich came with homemade tomato ketchup and brown sauce. The brown sauce was amazing, I could of ate a batch-full! The eggs were perfectly cooked on a thick slice of wholemeal bread, the perfect meal to set you up for the rest of the day.

After brunch, we devoured a slice of homemade Victoria Sponge, made with homemade jam. This was the perfect treat to end our superb meal.

Speaking to Roddy, you really got the feel he would move the Earth for you. Nothing was too much trouble and he gave each customer personal visit to make sure everything was okay.

The café and bar is open 10am-7pm, with alcohol being served from 12pm. You can also shop local North Yorkshire products such as the fantastic Yorkshire tonic we sampled and the Yorkshire Wolds apple juice.

After we were finished in the café, a member of staff asked us if we would like a tour of one of the geodesic domes. We were itching to see what they looked like inside. Just like the café, the domes are furnished to the highest standard with a king size bed, sano speakers, kitchenette, bathroom, fire-pit bbq and even a view from above your bed looking out to the stars. The Perfect Hill really takes glamping to a whole new level!

If you are looking for somewhere with spectacular views, a friendly service in a unique setting, be sure to visit The Perfect Hill. A real hidden gem in the Yorkshire hills!
