Beech Hill Hotel & Spa Review – Luxury from the moment you arrive

Wine & Dine Yorkshire were kindly invited to check out Beech Hill Hotel & Spa over in Lake Windermere and what an experience it was! From breathtaking views to delicious food, the hotel really had it all and we certainly was not disappointed.

We are going to share with our readers the full rundown on our stay, as we just know you are going to want to visit after you hear it.

The hotel is amazing, as soon as you walked through the front doors, you was greeted with an amazing open foyer area with many sofas for relaxing, and all extremely spacious. Many of the 55 bedrooms have private balconies or access to the garden, simply open the glass doors, breathe in the fresh Cumbrian air and enjoy the unrivalled views of Windermere. This hotel really is amazing and in a perfect location.

Before even arriving at the hotel, we were running very late due to traffic and knew we wouldn’t make our dinner reservation. However, this wasn’t a problem as the friendly staff happily rearranged this even though the restaurant was full of reservations.

Upon arriving we was greeted by the lovely reception staff who were extremely welcoming and chatted away to us, she got us booked in for the spa facilities for both the Saturday and Sunday and then directed us to the Windermere Suite.

Due to arriving late we simply dropped our bags in our room and headed downstairs for a drink and to soak up the amazing view from the balcony and the bar/restaurant, and what a view this was, from every seat you had breathtaking views of Lake Windermere and the mountains beyond. As the sun was shining, we went to sit outside where we was presented with some lovely canapés – if this was a taste of what was to come we was extremely excited about our stay.

We had a look over the menu and was then directed to the restaurant, again which boasted breathtaking views of Lake Windermere – it was certainly a meal with a view throughout the whole stay.
Upon sitting down we was treated to freshly made bread and butter, the bread was still warm and soft and a really nice touch.

The restaurant within Beech Hill was called Burlington’s – Burlington derives its name from the local slate quarried in the fells around the Lake District and their emphasis is on the word local. Head chef, Lukasz Zebryk and his team constantly strive to source and serve the very best locally farmed, caught and grown produce and where possible Cumbrian and Lancastrian products are used. The menu offers a broad choice and changes regular to enable them to follow seasonal product as the months roll by

For starters we had Ham Hock and Pheasant Terrine which was served with a black garlic ketchup, hard boiled Quails egg and almond crumb. This dish was beautiful, you broke into the egg and the runny yolk smothered the Terrine, the garnish on the side was extremely fresh along with the capers that really complimented the terrine.

We also had the House-smoked Sea Trout Pate served with horseradish cream, watercress and melba toast. Again this was a lovely presented dish, the horseradish cream really compliment the strong taste of the pate. Both starters were amazing and we would definitely order again.

For the mains we chose Lamb Rump accompanied with green lentil fumet, sautéed hispi cabbage and mint salsa, and Confit Duck Leg with sweet potato mash, red cabbage and poached pear.

The lamb rump was cooked to perfection, the mint salsa complimented the lamb perfectly – who doesn’t love lamb with mint? The vegetables were beautiful, the hispi cabbage was hidden under the lamb but when you got to it, wow, this was absolutely beautiful, the cabbage was topped with garlic and was perfect to add into every bite – a dish full of flavours that really got your taste buds going.

The duck leg couldn’t of been cooked anymore perfect, it fell off the bone and you could literally pull it apart with your fork, just absolutely amazing. The red cabbage again was a great pairing and worked really well with the duck. This dish is a 100% must, the best duck dish I’ve every had.

Once we had finished our meal we headed straight back upstairs with some bubbles to enjoy our private hot tub.

We were staying in The Windermere Suite, the finest suite extravagantly designed with an abundance of space and stunning views. Bringing the outside in with large bifold doors to the decking, loungers and your very own 5 person hot tub to enjoy the uninterrupted views of Windermere. The room was amazing, extremely spacious with the bed looking through the bifold doors to the breathtaking views, your balcony and your private hot tub. Depending what experience you are looking for there is really no need to leave your room with room service available, sun loungers, table and chairs on your balcony, not forgetting the amazing hot tub – it really is an experience you will never forget.

What a night we had, the privacy of your own private hot tub on your balcony, with the lovely evening sky and the amazing views of the lake, you literally couldn’t ask for anything better. This topped off a brilliant night and we couldn’t wait to do it all again tomorrow.

The next morning we headed down for breakfast, again all the staff were lovely, every single one of them asked us how our evening was, making sure our stay was as amazing as it should be. We had breakfast, again in the restaurant where you could choose from an extensive continental breakfast which includes a variety of freshly made breads, croissants & pastries, a selection of cold meats and cheeses, a variety of cereals, yoghurts and fresh fruit or you could opt for supplementary cooked to order hot breakfast menu.

We obviously had to go for a Full English Breakfast! You could choose from fried, scrambled or poached egg. We opted for scrambled, also as we aren’t a fan of tomatoes, we asked if the tomato could be eliminated, this wasn’t a problem at all, again very accommodating with your requirements. The breakfast was lovely and it came with bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms and a hash brown – very filling breakfast that set you up for the day.

We also had the Scrambled Egg, Smoked Salmon and Avocado a lovely, light breakfast, perfect for those who like an alternative to a full English. This was beautiful, extremely good portion of salmon, the toast was lovely and crispy and the scrambled egg creamy. Another very filling breakfast that again set you up for the day.

We headed back to the room after breakfast to get changed as we was booked into using the spa facilities from 12noon-3pm. The weather wasn’t that great today, it was raining most of the day but that didn’t stop us jumping in our hot tub for an hour before our spa experience.

We headed up to the spa for lunch time, and this really didn’t disappoint. The Lakeview Spa is unique in that whether you are in the indoor pool, the vitality spa pools on the spa terrace or any of the treatment rooms, you have unrivalled views of Windermere and the snow capped ranges beyond. You are presented with three spa treatment rooms (including a couples treatment room), a Himalayan Sauna, an aromatic Steam Room, two outside Vitality Spa Pools and a 40ft indoor pool – we made the most of these and experienced them all.

We both booked a head, shoulder and back massage to enjoy after which again certainly didn’t disappoint, i’ve personally never had a massage, mainly because I suffer from lower back problems and I was always a little wary incase it made it worse, however I threw caution to the wind and booked one, and i’m so glad I did. The masseuse went through everything with us, asked us if we had any back problems and where etc, she made sure she knew everything before she carried out the massage, this really was something else. My back felt amazing when I came out, if anyone hasn’t had a massage before I would certainly recommend having one.

Once we had finished in the spa, we headed for a glass of wine to take to our room, while we got ready for our evening meal.

Having eaten at the restaurant the night before, we knew we was in for a treat and couldn’t wait to try new dishes

For starters we chose Mackerel and Dill Ballotine with cured apple, potato and caper salad with herb oil. What a starter! This dish was jam packed with flavour, the mackerel and dill ballotine was beautiful, packed with flavour, the potatoes and caper salad was gorgeous, lovely and creamy and the little balls of apple was delicious and pallet cleansing – certainly worth a try, I would order this time and time again.

The main stars of the show were the Cod Loin served with creamed leeks, saffron potatoes and pancetta crisp.
The cod was so flavoursome and light with the heavy kick of the creamed leeks. The pancetta crisp was exactly how described, lovely and crispy, you bit into it and it just flaked into bits it was that crispy. The whole dish was packed full of flavour and most certainly my favourite main course.

We also had the Poach-roasted Local Chicken Supreme with honey roasted parsnips, cauliflower cream and florets.
The chicken was super juicy and succulent, the cauliflower cream really compliments the whole dish, I’m not a massive fan of parsnips but I have to say, these were beautiful and I may possibly be converted.

We fancied a dessert this night so opted for the Beech Hill Sticky Toffee Pudding with banana, vanilla ice cream and butterscotch sauce. We asked if we could swap the ice cream for pouring cream for this dessert, as throughout our whole stay, this wasn’t a problem at all and they presented us with pouring cream instead of ice cream. We just knew this dessert was going to be lovely, it was a big portion but certainly left you wanting more from the amazing taste.

On the Sunday morning, we headed back down to breakfast again to be treated to lovely pastries, the cooked breakfast and just take in those beautiful views for one last time.

We’d like to give a special mention for Jacob who was on the bar, it was his first day when we arrived and he was lovely, super friendly and chatted to him for ages, we found ourselves gravitate to him as he was so welcoming. It really can be the smaller touches, as we was driving out of the car park, he was stood outside and waved us off.

Our visit to The Beech Hill Hotel & Spa will certainly be a weekend to remember and we already cannot wait to return. From the moment you arrive, you are treated brilliant by the staff, sample some amazing dishes and of course relax and unwind in the spa and facilities onsite.
