Described as ‘Harrogate’s favourite traditional English pub’ The Fat Badger located on Cold Bath Road, Harrogate boasts a AA Rosette kitchen utilizing fresh, local, seasonal produce and is a definite must if you are ever in the area.
Our features writer, Ellie Atack, was invited to try out the new food menu and was not left disappointed. With a new menu and an enlarged outdoor dining area coming with the re-opening, The Fat Badger is ready and waiting for those eager summer diners.
Head Chef Richard Ferebee serves up traditional pub grub with his own twist on a number of dishes offering a high-level dining experience in the sociable surroundings of a traditional English pub. The building itself had a lovely Georgian character and ambience, we felt comfy, cosy and ready to tuck into some good grub.
We were seated to our table by the lovely Harry who was a very attentive waiter and made sure our drinks we always topped up and everything was okay during our visit.
For starter we went for the Charcuterie Sharing Board which consisted of a selection of cured meats, potted meats, cheese & fish. This had a little bit of everything you would love to see of a sharing board, the selection was fresh and the perfect starter for those who like a little ‘pick’n’peck’ of a variety of meats, fish and cheese.
Washing our starter down with a glass of red, we were now ready for our mains. We opted for the 10oz Rib-Eye Steak served with hand-cut chips & classic steak garnish. The steak was cooked beautifully as asked and the crispy, thick chips were perfect ducked in peppercorn sauce, the ultimate feel-good English pub-grub. My fillet of salmon Caesar salad was a huge portion of seared salmon fillet, cos lettuce, soft boiled eggs, olives, parmesan finished with a Caesar dressing. This was one of the best Caesar salads I have ever had, the crunchy lettuce paired with the soft salmon and kick of the parmesan was an exciting sensation for the palette and was a perfect, light dish to follow after the sharing board. I may try and recreate this dish at home but it’s doubtful I’ll make it as good.
After our meal, instead of a dessert we chose to sample some cocktails which were a highlight of our visit. The bar staff were able to make my partner a beautiful Lynchburg Lemonade even though it wasn’t on the menu, which shows how The Fat Badger vows to make your visit as perfect as possible. The Pornstar Martini was so fruity and refreshing, perfect on a summer’s day.
Overall, the food was excellent, our wine and cocktails went down a treat and the staff really went out of their way to make sure each guest had a pleasant experience in the restaurant. If you’re from Harrogate or ever visiting and need somewhere to try for dinner, get yourself to The Fat Badger, you will not be disappointed.
