Located in the heart of York and tastefully decorated with a comfortable and casual dining environment, Forage Bar & Kitchen is the perfect place for a date night or celebration with friends and family in the heart of York. Wine & Dine Yorkshire were invited to sample the menu and the service, setting, wine and food was superb. This restaurant, in our opinion, will become a staple of York’s culinary scene and is a definite must visit!
Forage is about more than good food and drink. It’s a place you feel relaxed. It’s an afternoon that turns into an evening, because, when the service is this friendly, the atmosphere this easy, the music this carefully pitched and the seats this comfortable, you can’t help but settle in.
We were taken to our table by the extremely friendly staff and started to look through the menu. We asked for Sourdough Bread as a pre-starter which they were more than happy doing – the cultured butter was amazing, it left you wanting more. Is there anything better than fresh bread with lots of butter?
We were then ready for our starters. We went for the scallops and pigeon. The scallops were cooked to perfection, golden brown but still slightly soft, exactly how scallops should be. I aren’t a massive fan of cooked apple which accompanied this dish, however it was nice and subtle and actually went very well with this dish, I would definitely order again.
The Pan Fried Pigeon is something I have never tried before, but I will certainly order again, it was a perfectly conceived dish and delicious! The brilliant thing about this restaurant is all the dishes are paired with excellent combinations and cooked beautifully that even if you haven’t tried them before, you are bound to enjoy them.
It was then time for our mains and we both opted for the same dish. That was the Pork Belly. This is one of our favourite dishes and this certainly didn’t disappoint, the soft and tender pork melted in your mouth and was incredibly flavoursome. The best pork dish we have had in a long while!
To accompany the main dish we chose a number of sides. The Barbecue Grilled Hispi Cabbage stood out as it sounded very different. I had never had anything like this before, but wow, this was gorgeous and packed full of flavour. Due to the cabbage being grilled, it transformed the cabbage from a basic vegetable to a star element of the meal. Obviously we also went for the Forage Triple Cooked Chips. Again, these were beautifully cooked, crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy inside. The perfect side dish.
Overall our visit to Forage was excellent, we couldn’t fault any of the dishes we had and were extremely impressed with how knowledgeable the staff were.
So, if you are visiting York or looking for a neighbourhood restaurant and late-night bar in the beating heart of York, moments from the cobbled streets of Stonegate and just a few streets from the historic Shambles.
